Brazilians of the North.
A big game expected tonight, 6th of March 2016,
as in the main event of the Stan Calvert Cup Final, Team Northumbria and Team
Newcastle University will face each other in a decisive football match, which
could very possible be the decider between the two universities in Newcastle,
in terms of who will take home the most-wanted trophy.
With six consecutive wins for Newcastle University in the
past, and only two but hoping for a third consecutive victory this year, Team Northumbria
are starting as favourites, due the form they are showing this season, putting in
practice some good football in both, BUGS League and Northern League, where
they are successfully facing former professional footballers.
The rivalry between this two teams states back to 1994, when
the first Stan Calvert Cup took place.
Tonight’s game will take place on Gateshead Stadium, with a
capacity of 11.800 places. So far the crowd is numerous, counting on a first
sight, at least 2500 spectators, split almost even between the sides of
Northumbria and Newcastle.
The match kicks off at 7:55 p.m. with a first header towards
goal in the 5th minute by Team Newcastle followed by a period of possession
for Team Northumbria, showing excellent passing skills for the level of
pressure they are under , with the Newcastle Uni supporters proving to be
louder than the others.
Northumbria leads the game and dictates the style of play so
far, continuous possession broke by a surprising miss from only 4 meters with
only the goalkeeper to face from Newcastle University.
Hard work pays, but creating chances does not actually mean
scoring a goal for Northumbria as they barely miss a shot at the far post in
the 28th minute of the first half.
The first half ends and the cheerleaders are in to entertain
the public.
Second half begins after a tremendous show being put in by
the athletes from both, Northumbria and Newcastle University.
With 6 corners won on the first half, Northumbria kicks in
with another corner, but lefts spaces in defence as following the corner, Team
Newcastle opens the score and makes in 1-0.
A tuff act to follow from Northumbria after a very good
first half, but now they also have to produce something in front of the goal,
to equalise and maybe win this final.
Some dribbling skills are being shown by Newcastle’s right
winger and the crowd goes cheering for more. There are no Pele’s or Ronaldinho’s
on the field but the talent is clearly visible from the stand for a bunch of
players at Northumbria University, showing also the good talents they work
around, in which we find former professional players such as Liviu Cristea, Matias
Fondato or Ayoze Perez’s (Newcastle United striker) brother, Samuel Perez.
The match continued on the same manner with Northumbria
leading the game but not the score, and it finishes with Newcastle playing more
and more aggressive without the ball, managing to count 13 fouls suffered by
Team Northumbria, with only 5 on the other side of the stats charts.
The referee blows the final whistle.
A tremendous atmosphere as the trophy is being presented to
the winners of The Stan Calvert Cup 2016, Northumbria University, who, even if
they lost the football match, won by the points obtained by other sport
departments, of which, some decisive events were taking part in the half time
break.
The match delivered very good football from both sides, with
Northumbria playing the ball around, creating chances, but with lucky Newcastle
popping one in on the counter attack.
After the football shown tonight, Team Northumbria has the
potential to gain the title of “Brazilians of the North”, which you will agree
with if at some point you take some time watching them play also in the
Northern or BUGS League. Trust me, it’s worth your time if you love football.
Having their home ground at Coach Lane Campus, I personally
encourage you to join for more of the show you have seen tonight, at their
league matches.
Thank you for your time and congratulations to Northumbria
for winning The Stan Calvert Cup 2016!
