Forget the prospectus,
leaflets, guide books: if you want to know the real atmosphere at Northumbria
University, you need to speak to a student. So here I am giving you a quick
overview on the things you won’t know until you experience them in here.
Do not fear the change, just go with it,
take it step-by-step!
First year is the most challenging one, because
of the word “change”. You will change your friends, your priorities, but most
important you will most probably feel the change between high school/ college
and university, in terms of learning style. You will need to be much more
self-directed in terms of learning. So tip number one for you will be to
embrace the change and enjoy the process because the destination is already
there!
You will have no excuse not to
do your best!
This is Northumbria, and most
of the people here are human-focused, as I have experienced. Just reading the
leaflets, checking the website, reading all the words sent to you, you may have
formed and overall idea. Trust me it is way better!
For example, in none of my
conceptual ideas, before coming here, studying architecture, there were no
massive facilities, but when I arrived I was amazed of the laboratories and the
technology available. As far as I visited, we, at Northumbria are easy
comparable with other major Universities, not only in the UK but all-over the
world so…
Listen,
share and get on with your colleagues, your new family!
As humans make the place be
the way it is, it comes easy to say that students make Northumbria the way it
is! So if you are having any doubts about yourself, as long as you have been
offered a place, the university
certainly has seen something great in you. You have potential! Trust yourself!
A massive word when it comes to uni is trust! I was unsecure,
so I talk from experience, I knew there was something in me that I was chosen
for, but when I arrived here, I thought everyone was knowing something that I
do not know, fact that made me a bit
suspicious about the atmosphere and I was overwhelmed by a feeling of
competition. I was wrong, as a personal advice, I would strongly recommend you
to share your knowledge and listen to the others at the same time. I know way
more things since I knew at my arrival just from exposing myself to other
people’s knowledge.
Regarding the competition
feeling, I must say that it is useful but, usually when it comes to yourself,
because in your group of colleagues, you will not need it! Trust me, here in my
architecture group, we became nothing but a family. We all empathised because
we had the same initial context/situation.
Business
opportunities depend on yourself! Be cultural!
Race, habits, preferences,
there is no such things, brace yourself with an open-mind because the future
means globalisation, we are slowly but surely heading towards an universal
language and way of doing business in each and every sector, but until then, we
prepare by studying other cultures. Not all of us think the same, it strongly
depends by culture. For example, respect is universal form for each and every
individual, you would say, but I just found out that in China, if someone
offers you their business card you must take a moment to look at it and most
important, do not throw it in your back pocket, because they will feel
un-respected.
I started as a very
conservative character but in only few months I started to share love for
different types of food, music, lectures, thinking concepts from many places that I may have never heard
of. It is a beautiful experience. The more you experience various cultures, the
more you will be prepared to widen your both, spiritual and business
perspective.
Update yourself in a
cosmopolitan atmosphere! Get along, not apart! Northumbria thinks
international!
You will fully experience the….Big city life..
I feel responsible to tell
you a quick opinion of mine regarding adult life, which you will begin at
university. I felt like life, until uni was
free-to-play, but now it is quite pay-to-play so you will feel to get a
job. Even when it comes to private finances, Northumbria University has a
strong department when it comes to career and development. I left home with
only few hundred pounds, and the University helped me find a job and easily
maintain a decent student life in the city.
Following the main thing that
I did not know about, I must talk about the city of Newcastle. I have seen
photos, but google is not prepared to deliver all the beauty of
Newcastle upon Tyne, nor the beauty of the City Campus. It is way bigger than
it looks in any imagery. Discover it
yourself. I has passed almost a year since I am in Newcastle and I have barely
seen a quarter of its beauty so, you
will definitely not get bored around.
